Diwali celebrations last for 5 days, and there are usually different rituals and traditions every day. Below we have listed all the days of Diwali and their calendar dates and a short description of what happened each day:

Day 1-Dhanteras:

November 2, 2021 (Tuesday) Dwadashi This is the first day of the festival. People clean the houses and prepare for the upcoming events. This is also a busy shopping day, and going to the market to buy gold or new kitchen supplies is considered lucky.

Day 2-Choti Diwali:

November 3, 2021 (Wednesday) Trayodashi The next day is the day when people start decorating their houses. Many families will hang up string lights and start making their rangoli, which is an intricate design placed on the home floor. See more details about the traditional decorations of Diwali here.

Day 3-Diwali and Lakshmi Puja:

November 4, 2021 (Thursday) Amavasya The most important part of the celebration is the ceremony held on this day.

Clay oil lamps or diyas are lit, and a ritual to worship the goddess Lakshmi is performed. The most auspicious time of worship (puja) is 6:09 pm to 8:4 pm. Sacrifices can be carried out in temples or homes by placing a red cloth on the puja chowki ("worship table"), placing the idol on it, and then offering flowers, fruits (water chestnut, pomegranate, papaya and coconut) and desserts (especially Kesari bhaat-semolina pudding with saffron, nuts, and sugar) was given to the goddess Lakshmi, and then bowed in front of the idol and prayed with folded hands.

On the day of Diwali, families gather to exchange gifts and enjoy a feast. Light clay oil lamps or diyas and perform a ritual to worship the goddess Lakshmi. Many people put on their best clothes on this day and said "Happy Diwali" to each other.

Day 4-Padwa:

November 5, 2021 (Friday) Prapipada The fourth day of the holiday is dedicated to the love of the couple. Men often buy gifts for their wives. Many companies open new accounts on this day because it is considered an auspicious day.

Day 5-Bhai Duj:

November 6, 2021 (Saturday) Dwitiya Bhai Duj (Bhaubeej), the last day of celebration is dedicated to brothers and sisters. To celebrate their relationship, the sisters held a special ceremony for their brothers to protect them. The brothers gave gifts to the sisters.
