Every year, Mahashivratri is celebrated as the convergence of Shiva and Shakti's forces. This festival, which celebrates the union of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, is considered to be one of the most important Hindu festivals. The auspicious festival will be held on 2022 March 01 Tuesday this year. 

There are three things to observe especially on the day of Mahashivaratri.
1) Fasting 2) Waking up at night 3) Anointing with the remembrance of Lord Shiva.

The evening time of Maha Shivaratri is called Pradosha. Shiva Smarana (remembrance of Lord Shiva) and Siva Darshan should be made a ritual during the period of Pradosha.

Significance of Maha Shivaratri(Maha Shivratri)

Shivratri is celebrated every month according to the Hindu calendar. Maha Shivaratri falls once a year in late winter (February or March) before summer. Maha Shivaratri (Maha Shivratri) means auspicious auspicious night. Today it is known that God will do Maha Tandavam. On the day of Shivaratri, one stays awake all night and worships Lord Shiva. Fruits, sweets and leaves are offered to him. Devotees fast and chant the Panchakshari mantra 'Om Namahshivaya'.

Pandits also say that Ashtaishwaryas can be attained by participating in the puja held at Shiva temples on the day of Shivratri.

On this day a special puja of the four Prahar is performed in the temples. Each Prahar has a specific anointing for worship. At the same time the recitation continues along with the prescribed offering.

First Prahar Puja

Worship includes anointing and decoration. They worship the Lord with sandalwood, belpatri and lotus flowers. Moong Dal pongal is offered as an offering. Recitation of the Rig Veda brings good fortune. That is, the belief that all good fortune will come to those who participate in this First Prahar Puja.

Second Prahar Puja

Madhuparkam in this puja means anointing with sugar, milk, curd and ghee. After that, they are adorned with rose water and camphor sandalwood and the belpatri are adorned with basil. The Yajurveda is recited by offering payasam as an offering. This leads to parental access. Midnight 12 o'clock is the time of Shiva Linga darshan, so this anointing is very sacred.

Third Prahar Puja

It is anointed with honey and garnished with camphor sandalwood ointment. Archana, rice and sesame with belpatri and jasmine offerings and reciting the Samaveda will bring immense wealth.

Fourth Prahar Puja

Abhisheka with sugarcane juice and dacorate with jasmine, lotus flowers and camphor sandalwood powder. Archana with lotus, lily and jasmine flowers and offer cooked rice. Vedic scholars claim that reciting the Atharvana Veda brings harmony in the family.

So the devotees should fast all day meditating on Mahasiva with great stipulation. In fact on Mahashivaratri the devotees who are meditating on Shiva are starving. However, many people nowadays suffer from diseases like BP and sugar and tend to eat little breakfast. This is an exception though.

Health is called great fortune. Even Lord Shiva does not want the health of his devotees to deteriorate. So those who suffer from such minor ailments that are mistaken should not take breakfast. Breakfast is a very important meal - it can either make or break your day. It is said that fruits like pineapple, grapes and guava found during this period can be taken.
